In Greek mythology, Erebus (/ˈɛrɪbəs/;[1]Ancient Greek: Ἔρεβος, romanized: Érebos, “deep darkness, shadow”[2]), or Erebos, is the personification of darkness and one of the primordial deities. Hesiod‘s Theogony identifies him as one of the first five beings in existence, born of Chaos.
According to the Greek oral poet Hesiod‘s Theogony, Erebus is the offspring of Chaos,[5] and the brother of Nyx, by whom he is the father of Aether and Hemera.[6]

原初の幽冥を神格化したもの。名前は「地下世界」を意味する。また、地下の暗黒の神でもあり、しばしばタルタロスと混同される。
ニュクスの兄にして夫で、彼女との間にヘーメラーとアイテールとカローンをもうける。
母ニュクスと娘ヘーメラーが、夜と昼の対であるということで表裏一体であるように、息子アイテールと父エレボスも、上天の光明と地下の暗黒という点で表裏一体をなす。
